How We Design a 3D Paper Cut Template: Behind the Scenes

Every template in our catalogue goes through the same six stages: concept, sketch, depth map, vector, test cut, package. The stage that takes longest is not the drawing - it is cutting the thing on a real machine and finding out which lines your Cricut hates. This is what actually happens between an idea and a downloadable file.

Who Is Doing This

Vektor Kraft is a small design studio. Our team sits in Hanoi, Vietnam, and the people drawing these templates are the same people answering support emails when a layer will not cut. That feedback loop is short on purpose - a problem a customer hits on Tuesday tends to change how we draw on Wednesday.

The catalogue is now over 3,400 designs across light boxes, lanterns, pop-ups, shadow boxes and 3D boxes. Every one of them went through the process below.

Stage 1-2: Concept and Sketch

The first question is never "what should this look like." It is "what should this feel like when it is lit at night."

That reframing matters because a paper cut design has to work as a silhouette, in one colour, with light behind it. A beautiful illustration full of subtle tonal work translates into a light box as an indistinct blob. A simple, strongly-shaped composition translates brilliantly.

So the sketch stage is mostly subtraction. We draw the scene, then remove everything that will not survive being reduced to an outline. What remains is usually 40% of the original idea, and it is a better design for it.

The test we apply

Squint at the sketch until it blurs. If you can still tell what it is, it will work as a paper cut. If it turns to noise, it will not - regardless of how nice the detailed version looks on screen.

Stage 3: The Depth Map

This is the stage with no equivalent in flat illustration, and it is the one that makes a design good or mediocre.

We take the flat composition and decide which element lives on which layer. Foreground grass on layer 6, the deer on layer 4, tree line on layer 3, mountains on layer 2, sky on layer 1. Each element has to be assigned to exactly one plane.

Two rules govern it:

  • Every layer must be structurally sound on its own. A layer that is 90% cut away will sag, tear during weeding, and eventually curl in the frame. If an element requires that, it moves to a different layer or gets a connecting bridge.
  • Adjacent layers must differ visibly. If layer 4 and layer 5 look nearly identical, you have added an hour of cutting to the customer's build for no visual gain. Merge them.

Stage 4: Vector Work

Now it becomes a technical drawing rather than an artwork.

Layer numbering in the corner So you can rebuild the stack order if the sheets get shuffled
Bridges on floating elements An unconnected shape falls out of the sheet - bridges hold it in place

That last one is the invisible craft of this job. Every element that would otherwise float free needs a small connecting bridge, and each bridge has to be placed where it will not be noticed in the finished piece. On a dense design that is a hundred small judgement calls.

Stage 5: The Test Cut

Here is where the schedule goes sideways, and where most studios cut corners.

We cut every design on a real Cricut, on real 200 gsm cardstock, and assemble it. Not a software preview. An actual physical build.

What it catches, reliably:

  • Detail that looked fine at screen zoom and tears in reality
  • Bridges placed somewhere ugly once the sheet is lit
  • Layers that turn out to be visually redundant
  • Spacer margins fouled by an element that creeps too close to the edge
  • Weeding order problems - a layer that is technically cuttable but miserable to clean up
The number that matters

Roughly one design in three goes back for revision after its test cut. If a studio is releasing dozens of designs a week, they are not test cutting.

Stage 6: Packaging

The last stage is unglamorous and it is the one customers actually touch first.

  • SVG - Cricut Design Space and Silhouette paid editions
  • DXF - Silhouette Studio free edition, which cannot import SVG. Including this means nobody has to buy an upgrade to use our files.
  • PDF - print and hand cut, for people who would rather use a craft knife
  • PNG - visual reference for layer order during assembly
  • Instruction sheet - stated finished size, layer count, recommended spacer thickness

What This Means for Your Build

Three things worth taking from the process into your own work:

  1. The number in the corner is load-bearing. It exists because we could not rebuild the stack without it either.
  2. Do not rescale. Detail sizes were tuned against a real machine at the stated size. Shrink the file 20% and you push fine elements below the cutting threshold.
  3. Bridges are deliberate. That small connecting tab you were about to trim off is holding a floating element in place. Leave it.

Why We Wrote This Down

Partly so you know what you are buying. Mostly because the questions we get most often - why is this layer shaped oddly, why can I not resize, why is there a random little tab here - all have the same answer: something upstream in this process required it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to design one paper cut template?

Between eight and thirty hours depending on complexity, and roughly a third of that is test cutting and revision rather than drawing.

Why do some designs have more layers than others?

Layer count follows the scene, not a house rule. A single animal silhouette may need four layers; a layered forest with foreground, mid-ground and sky may need nine.

Do you test every design on a real machine?

Yes. Every template is cut on a real Cricut before it goes on sale. It is the slowest stage and the one that catches the most problems.

Why is there a DXF file in every download?

Silhouette Studio's free edition cannot import SVG. Including DXF means Silhouette users do not have to buy the paid upgrade to use our files.

Can I request a custom design?

Yes - we take custom commissions through the Custom collection. Turnaround depends on complexity and the current queue.
