How to Upload SVG Files from ZIP to Cricut Design Space (2026 Guide)
Cricut Design Space cannot open a ZIP file. You extract the ZIP first, then upload the SVG inside it. On Windows and Mac that is a right-click; on iPhone and iPad it is a single tap in the Files app. Here is the process on every device, plus fixes for the four things that usually go wrong.
Why the ZIP Exists at All
A single template is not a single file. A typical Vektor Kraft download contains an SVG for Cricut, a DXF for Silhouette free edition, a print-and-cut PDF for hand cutting, PNG previews, and an assembly instruction sheet. Five to eight files.
A ZIP bundles them into one download so nothing goes missing. It is a container, not a file format - which is exactly why Design Space refuses it.
Windows 10 and 11
- Find the downloaded .zip - usually in your Downloads folder.
- Right-click it and choose Extract All.
- Confirm the destination folder and click Extract. A normal folder opens with the loose files inside.
- The file you want ends in .svg.
Windows lets you double-click a ZIP and browse inside it, which looks like a normal folder. Files opened this way live in a temporary location and Design Space will often fail to read them. Always Extract All first.
macOS
Double-click the .zip in Finder. macOS extracts it immediately into a folder beside the original, no dialog, no extra software. Open that folder and take the .svg.
iPhone and iPad - The Shortcut
This is the fastest route of all, and most people do not know it exists.
- Download the ZIP in Safari. Tap the download arrow, then the file, to open it in the Files app.
- Tap the ZIP once. iOS unpacks it into a folder with the same name automatically. No app, no purchase.
- Open Cricut Design Space, tap Upload, then Browse Files.
- Navigate to that folder and select the .svg.
iOS has handled ZIP natively since iOS 13. If a tutorial tells you to buy an unzip app, it is out of date.
Android
Open Files by Google (or your device file manager), tap the ZIP, then tap Extract. Choose a destination you can find again - Downloads is fine. Then upload from Design Space as normal.
Uploading Into Design Space
- In Design Space, open a new project and click Upload in the left panel.
- Click Upload Image, then Browse, and pick your .svg.
- Design Space shows a preview. Name it something you will recognise in six months and add tags if you use them.
- Click Upload, then select the uploaded design and click Add to Canvas.
- Turn off Adaptive Border or any auto-resize option before cutting.
- Check the size. Templates are built at a specific finished size - scaling breaks the spacer margins.
Auto-scaling is the number one cause of layers that will not align. If your software offers to fit the design to the mat, decline. Set the size manually to the dimensions stated in the listing.

Silhouette Studio Free Edition
The free version of Silhouette Studio will not import SVG - that is a paid upgrade. You do not need to buy it.
Every Vektor Kraft download includes a DXF file for exactly this reason. In Silhouette Studio go to File > Open, change the file type filter to DXF, and open it. Same cut paths, no upgrade.
