Why Spacers Decide Everything
Take a finished light box apart and lay the layers flat on a table. The image goes dead instantly. Nothing changed except the gaps.
Depth in this craft is manufactured shadow. A front layer can only cast a shadow onto the layer behind it if there is space between them. More space, longer shadow, more apparent distance. Spacers are how you buy that space, one gap at a time.
Choosing Thickness - Five Variables
There is no single correct number. Five things push it up or down:

Commonly available foam board runs 3-7 mm. Paper spacers let you work in the 1-3 mm range, which is where dense multi-layer designs want to live.

The Frame-Depth Calculation
Before you cut a single spacer, do this. It takes thirty seconds and prevents the most demoralising failure in the craft - a finished stack that will not close into its frame.
- Count your gaps, not your layers. Six layers means five gaps.
- Multiply gaps x spacer thickness. Five gaps x 5 mm = 25 mm.
- Add the paper: 6 layers x 0.25 mm = 1.5 mm. Call it 27 mm total.
- Add your LED strip and back panel - typically 8-12 mm.
- Compare to your frame's internal depth. Leave at least 5 mm of headroom for the backing board to seat properly.
Retail listings quote external depth. Internal depth is usually 10-15 mm less once you account for the rebate and glass. Measure it yourself with the back off.
Getting the Width Right
Width is the dimension running around the margin of the layer - how far the spacer intrudes toward the image. Too narrow and the stack is unstable; too wide and the spacer becomes visible past the frame lip.

- Skipping a gap. Two layers touching read as one layer. You lose a whole step of depth and the eye notices even if the brain does not.
- Uneven pressure when taping. A lifted spacer corner shows as a bright light leak once the LED is on. Press every corner.
- Aligning to the previous layer. Errors compound. Always align to the frame edge.
- Cutting spacers from a different stock than the layers. Different thickness, different compression, uneven stack.
The Boring Part That Does the Work
