The Window Is Narrower Than You Think

Paper choice feels like a low-stakes decision and is not. It determines whether your layers hold their shape, whether the light behaves, and whether your machine can cut the detail at all.

Below 160 gsm - too light

Three failures, all of them slow. Layers sag in the frame within weeks. Light bleeds through the paper rather than being blocked by it, so your silhouettes go soft. And the sheets curl over time as humidity changes.

You will not notice any of this on day one. You will notice all of it by month three.

Above 250 gsm - too heavy

A home cutting machine has a fixed amount of downward force. Push past 250 gsm and it stops slicing cleanly and starts crushing - which shows as fuzzy edges on fine detail and tears on narrow bridges.

It also blunts blades noticeably faster, and the stack gets thick enough that a standard frame will not close.

If you buy one weight

200 gsm matte white. It cuts on one pass on every home machine, blocks light properly, holds its shape in a frame for years, and takes a fold without cracking. Everything else in this article is refinement on top of that.

GSM to lb Conversion

US suppliers quote lb cover, everywhere else quotes gsm, and the lb scale is genuinely confusing because it means different things for different paper categories.

A 65 lb text weight and a 65 lb cover weight are completely different papers. If the listing does not say "cover", find the gsm figure before buying.

Matte, Gloss and Texture

Matte is correct for essentially everything. It diffuses the LED evenly and shows no fingerprints from assembly handling.

Gloss is a trap. It looks premium in the pack and then reflects your LED straight back at the viewer, creating bright hotspots that flatten exactly the depth you built. Skip it.

Textured - linen, laid, hammered finishes - looks lovely on a card and fights your blade on fine detail. The texture catches the tip and produces a ragged edge. Acceptable on bold shapes, not on kirigami-level detail.

For most light boxes the paper should be one colour and the light should carry the mood - see the LED colour guide. The exceptions are pieces meant to be seen in daylight as well as lit, where a multi-tone stack earns its keep.

Metallic, Vellum and Specialty Stock

Metallic and foil-finish - genuinely useful for 25th silver and 50th gold anniversary pieces. More brittle than plain stock and it shows blade drag badly. Use a fresh blade, cut a test square, and expect to go one pressure setting higher.

Vellum and tracing paper - not a layer material, a diffuser. One sheet between the LED strip and your rearmost layer eliminates visible bulb dots and evens out hotspots. It is the cheapest quality upgrade in the whole craft.

Black core / duplex - white one side, black the other. Interesting for pieces viewed unlit as well as lit. Cuts like normal cardstock at the same weight.

Always cut a test square

Before committing a full sheet of anything unfamiliar, cut a 3 cm square with some fine internal detail. Thirty seconds, and it saves whole sheets of expensive metallic stock.

Paper spacers cut from the same stock as your layers - square and rectangle, sized to the 1 cm standard margin.

How Much to Buy

People consistently under-buy and then cannot match the sheet later, because cardstock varies slightly between production batches.

  1. Count the layers in your design and add two spare sheets per piece. You will ruin at least one.
  2. Add sheets for spacers if you are cutting paper spacers rather than using foam board.
  3. For a set of matching pieces, buy the entire quantity in one order. Batch variation shows when finished pieces sit side by side.
  4. Buy a full ream of your default white rather than packs of 20. It is dramatically cheaper per sheet and it never goes off.

Buy 200 gsm and Stop Thinking About It

Paper is the one variable in this craft where the correct answer is boring and settled. Get a ream of 200 gsm matte white, keep a pack of vellum for diffusing, and spend your decision-making on the design instead.
