Anniversary shadow box with two names and wedding date

Anniversary Shadow Box by Year: The Traditional Materials Guide

The first wedding anniversary is the paper anniversary - which makes a handmade paper cut piece not a loose interpretation of the tradition but a direct hit. This guide maps the traditional anniversary materials to what you can actually make, covers what to put on the piece, and flags the copyright trap that catches almost everyone designing a romantic gift.

The Year-by-Year Material Map

The traditional list is worth knowing because people actively search for it - and because it hands you a gift idea for free.

Year Traditional material What to make
1st Paper Paper cut light box or pop-up memory book - a literal match
2nd Cotton Paper piece framed with a cotton mat board, or a design featuring textile motifs
3rd Leather Paper piece in a leather-bound frame
5th Wood Paper design cut in wood, or a paper piece in a solid wood shadow box frame
10th Tin / aluminium Metallic cardstock layers, or a metal-framed piece
25th Silver Silver and pearl-finish cardstock; a piece marking 25 years
50th Gold Gold metallic layers - and this is the one where people go all out
The keyword nobody uses properly

People do not search "anniversary gift." They search "1st anniversary paper gift" and "5th anniversary wood gift." If you are making these to sell, that distinction is worth more than any amount of design polish.

Why the 1st Anniversary Is the Easy Win

Every other year on that list requires you to interpret. Cotton? Tin? You end up buying something adjacent and explaining the connection.

Year one, you just make the thing out of paper. No stretch, no explanation. And the couple is one year in, which is precisely when a handmade object still reads as romantic rather than as an obligation met.

Customisable anniversary designs leave both names and the date editable.

Two formats fit the paper anniversary particularly well:

What Goes On the Piece

Three elements, and one optional fourth.

  • Two first names. Not surnames. Not "Mr & Mrs".
  • The wedding date. Written out rather than numeric.
  • Optionally, the number of years - useful for milestone years, unnecessary for year one.
  • One motif - a place, a shared reference, or nothing at all.
The motif that beats every heart graphic

A skyline or landscape of where they met or married. It is specific to them, impossible to buy off a shelf, and it does not rely on a single romantic cliche. Pick the closest scene from the landscape collection and add the names beneath.

If you do use a heart motif, an unusual treatment of it beats a conventional one.
Do not put song lyrics on it

This is the single most common mistake in anniversary design. "Their song" is almost certainly a modern recording, and modern lyrics are fully in copyright. Putting one on a piece you sell is infringement; putting it on a piece you post publicly is a takedown waiting to happen.

Same applies to film dialogue and to quotes attributed to living authors.

What is safe: your own words, public-domain text (Shakespeare, the King James Bible, pre-1929 poetry), generic phrasing, or - best of all - just the two names and the date.

Honestly, the names and the date is the strongest option regardless of the legal question. A quote makes the piece about someone else's words. Two names makes it about them.

Later Milestones

The 25th and 50th are different projects, because by then the piece is usually being made by children or grandchildren rather than by one partner for the other.

That changes what belongs on it:

  • 25th silver: silver or pearl-finish cardstock, names, wedding date, and the year span. Consider a piece large enough for a hallway rather than a shelf.
  • 50th gold: gold metallic layers. This is the one occasion where going slightly over the top is correct. A lantern centrepiece for the table plus a framed piece for the wall is a good pairing.
Metallic cardstock cuts differently

Foil and metallic stocks are more brittle than plain cardstock and show blade drag badly. Use a fresh blade, cut a test square first, and expect to go one pressure setting higher. Details in the cardstock guide.

For milestone years, a lantern centrepiece plus a framed wall piece covers both the party and the aftermath.

Making It

  1. Confirm the date and the spelling of both names in writing before cutting. Same rule as memorial pieces, same reason.
  2. Use warm white or blush pink light at low brightness - see the LED colour guide.
  3. Six layers or fewer. Anniversary pieces are text-forward and text needs clear space behind it.
  4. For a 5th anniversary, frame the paper piece in a solid wood shadow box so the material tradition is still honoured.

One Year In, Made of Paper

Most anniversary gifts require you to interpret a tradition loosely and hope nobody checks. The first one does not. Cut it out of paper, put two names and a date on it, and you have hit the tradition exactly - which is a rare thing in gift-giving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the traditional gift for each wedding anniversary?

The widely used US list runs: 1st paper, 2nd cotton, 3rd leather, 5th wood, 10th tin or aluminium, 25th silver, 50th gold. Paper cut art is a literal fit for the first anniversary and works as a wall piece for any of them.

What is a good 1st anniversary paper gift?

A paper cut light box or pop-up memory book. The first anniversary is the paper anniversary, so a handmade paper piece is not a loose interpretation - it is exactly the tradition.

What should I put on an anniversary shadow box?

Two first names, the wedding date, and optionally the number of years. Anything more starts competing with itself.

Can I put song lyrics on an anniversary piece?

Not on anything you sell, and not on anything you post publicly. Modern lyrics are in copyright. Use your own words, a public-domain line, or just the names and the date - which is stronger anyway.

What about a 5th anniversary wood gift?

Cut the paper design as a template and use it as a guide for a wood-cut version, or frame a paper piece in a solid wood shadow box frame so the material still nods to the tradition.

Designs to Start With

Three files that suit what this guide covers - every download includes SVG, DXF, print-and-cut PDF and a PNG preview.

If none of these is quite right, start from the Vektor Kraft home page and work down by format, or browse what other people are cutting.
