How to Make a Star-Shaped Paper Cut Light Box: Holiday Tutorial
A star-shaped light box skips the frame entirely - the silhouette is the structure. That makes it cheaper to finish, easier to hang, and unmistakably seasonal. This tutorial covers the geometry that makes star points sit straight, the folding order, and how to light a shape with no flat back panel.

Why a Star Instead of a Box
Three practical reasons, beyond the obvious festive appeal.
- No frame purchase. A shadow box frame is often the most expensive part of a light box build. Star designs are self-supporting.
- It hangs. Rectangular light boxes want a shelf. A star wants a window, a doorway or a branch.
- Light escapes in all directions. Instead of one lit face, you get a glow that reads from every angle in the room.

The Geometry You Need to Respect
A star light box is a set of identical point modules joined around a central core. Because the pieces repeat, one small error repeats too - by the tenth point it is a visible gap.
- Do not scale non-uniformly. Stretching a star design 10% on one axis breaks every joint angle. Scale both axes together or not at all.
- Keep the tab width. Glue tabs are sized to the material thickness. Trimming them "to hide them better" is the most common cause of gappy seams.
- Work at the stated size. Below about 18 cm point to point, the interior angles get too tight for a home machine blade to turn cleanly.

Cutting

- Confirm score layers are set to Score, not Cut. Star designs rely heavily on scoring.
- Turn off any auto-fit or Adaptive Border option and set the size manually.
- Cut all point modules in one session from the same sheet batch - cardstock varies slightly between packs and it shows on a repeated shape.
- Weed carefully around the tips. Star points are the narrowest geometry in the file.
Folding the Points
This is where a star succeeds or fails. Every point has a spine fold and two side folds, and they need to be consistent across all modules.
- Fold the spine of every module first, all of them, before touching the side folds. Consistency comes from batching.
- Use a bone folder along a ruler. Press once, firmly.
- Fold the sides second, again all modules in one pass.
- Dry-fit two adjacent modules before gluing anything. If the joint gaps, your fold angle is shallow - re-crease harder rather than adding glue to fill it.
Assembly
Work in a ring, not point by point around the circle - errors accumulate and the last joint will not close.
- Glue points into opposite pairs first (top and bottom, then left and right). This keeps the star symmetrical.
- Fill in the remaining points between the pairs.
- Leave one point unglued as your access hatch for the light.
- Let the whole assembly cure for 30 minutes before handling it. Tacky glue feels dry long before it is strong.
Sealing every point before the light goes in is the single most annoying mistake in this build. One unglued point costs you nothing visually and saves the whole piece if a battery dies.
Lighting a Frameless Shape
There is no flat back panel here, so a rigid LED strip is the wrong tool.
- Fairy lights on wire are ideal. Coil them loosely inside the central core so the glow reaches every point. Battery packs with a timer function are worth the small premium.
- A single warm white bulb on a low-voltage cord works for larger stars and gives a cleaner, more even light.
- Avoid RGB colour cycling. Light escaping in all directions makes a colour shift far more distracting than it is in a framed box.
