Best Glue and Adhesive for Paper Craft Light Boxes
Two adhesives cover nearly every paper cut project: double-sided tape for spacers and layers, fine-tip tacky PVA for tabs and structural joins. Almost every visible glue problem - shine, warping, translucent patches that glow when lit - comes from using too much, or from using the wrong one of those two.

In a normal paper craft, a slightly wet glue patch is invisible. In a light box, an LED shines through the paper from behind - and a soaked patch of adhesive becomes a visible bright or dark spot. Adhesive choices that are fine elsewhere fail here.
Double-Sided Tape
The correct choice for anything involving flat layers and spacers, for one reason: zero moisture. Nothing to soak in, nothing to warp, nothing to dry translucent.
- Width: 6-9 mm suits the standard 1 cm spacer margin. Wider tape squeezes past the margin and becomes visible.
- Type: permanent, not repositionable. Repositionable tape releases over time and layers drift.
- Foam tape is a special case - it doubles as a spacer, roughly 1 mm per layer. Useful for shallow builds, and it counts toward your frame depth calculation.
- Apply tape to the spacer, not to the cut layer. Easier to place accurately and easier to correct.
- Cover the full length of each margin edge. Gaps become light leaks once the LED is on.
- Press every corner firmly. A lifted corner is the most common visible fault in a finished light box.
- Work on a flat surface and check alignment against the frame edge before pressing home.
Tacky PVA
For lanterns, 3D boxes and pop-ups, tape cannot do the job - curved and angled joins need an adhesive that flows into the contact area and gives you time to align.
Fine-tip applicator is not optional. A standard nozzle delivers roughly ten times more glue than a tab join needs, and the excess squeezes out at the seam and dries shiny. That shine is what makes a lantern look homemade.
A bead about the thickness of a thread, on the inside face of the tab. Hold twenty seconds, tape it, move on to the next joint. Do not stand there waiting for a full cure - you will be there all evening.

Attaching LEDs
Different problem, different adhesive. LED strips come with adhesive backing that is generally adequate on a smooth back panel.
When it is not:
- Hot glue - fine here, because the back panel is hidden and lumps do not matter. Small dots at intervals, not a continuous bead.
- Double-sided foam tape - holds well and lifts the strip slightly off the panel, which helps diffuse the light.
- Never PVA - it will not bond paper to the plastic backing of an LED strip.
Attach the strip, plug it in, confirm it works - then build the layer stack. Discovering a dead strip after the front layer is glued down is a genuinely miserable experience.
